Why screen hearing in school?
Importance and Benefits of Early Detection
Newborn hearing screening may not pick up all hearing losses. By identifying a hearing loss early, we can ensure that early intervention and treatment can be provided to help support the child.
Temporary Hearing Loss
A very common childhood condition that can result temporary hearing loss is glue ear. Glue ear occurs when the middle ear space becomes filled with a sticky fluid, it is usually related to a cold or cough. 1 in 5 pre-school children have glue ear at any one time and 8 out of 10 children will experience glue ear before the age of 10.
Consequences of Untreated Hearing Loss
Hearing loss in children can lead to behavioural and education difficulties. It can also cause delays in speech, language, and communication development.
